2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season: Predictions and Preparedness

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) and the Central Pacific Hurricane Center have predicted an active 2022 Atlantic hurricane season. The season, which runs from June 1st to November 30th, is expected to produce 14 to 21 named storms, with 6 to 10 of those becoming hurricanes and 3 to 6 becoming major hurricanes. This is above the 1991-2020 average of 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes.

May 1st-7th, 2022 was designated as National Hurricane Preparedness Week. This week is a reminder to coastal residents to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season. The NHC recommends developing a hurricane plan, gathering supplies, and staying informed about hurricane forecasts.

NHC New Products and Services

The NHC has developed a number of new products and services to help coastal residents prepare for and respond to hurricanes. NOAA's Outlook Update

On May 26th, 2022, NOAA updated its outlook for the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season. The updated outlook calls for a total of 14 to 21 named storms, with 6 to 10 of those becoming hurricanes and 3 to 6 becoming major hurricanes. This is slightly below the initial outlook, which called for 14 to 20 named storms, with 6 to 10 of those becoming hurricanes and 3 to 6 becoming major hurricanes.
